Bio
SERGEY SERGEEV
Born in 1953 in Leningrad, USSR.
In 1973, he graduated from the Theatrical Design Department of the V. A. Serov Leningrad Art School (now the N. K. Roerich Saint Petersburg Art School).
From 1973, he continued his studies at the V. I. Mukhina Leningrad Higher School of Industrial Art (now the Saint Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design), which he did not complete for professional reasons.
During this period, Sergey Sergeev developed a deep interest in painting techniques (ground preparation and layering), etching, and the philosophy of the Northern Renaissance (Lucas Cranach, Rogier van der Weyden, Jan van Eyck, Hugo van der Goes, Pieter Bruegel, Hieronymus Bosch). At the same time, he was influenced by the artistic traditions of Northern China, particularly the imagery of Zen Buddhism. The central concept he developed is that of “simplicity and complexity.”
At that time, he also began working at the Mariinsky Theatre as a costume designer and contributed to the creation of costumes and stage sets for the renowned ballet The Creation of the World, with Mikhail Baryshnikov in the leading role. He later worked at the “Lennauchfilm” studio as an animation artist and assistant director.
From 1975, Sergeev became an independent artist and a participant in the nonconformist movement. For ideological reasons, he never joined the official Union of Artists of the USSR or of the Russian Federation. In 1975, he became one of the founders of the “Alipiy” group, whose first exhibition was held in his apartment.
From 1981, he was one of the organizers and active participants in all exhibitions of the Experimental Fine Arts Society (TEII).
In 1995, he became one of the founders and the permanent art director of the contemporary art gallery D137 in Saint Petersburg, which later became one of the iconic galleries of its time (www.d137.org).
From 2013, Sergey Sergeev began working in France and permanently settled there in early 2022. He holds the status of a professional artist in France and is a member of the artists’ association La Maison des Artistes.
In 2023, he participated in the founding of the FABLE association (France. Art. Beauté. Liberté d’expression), where he serves as secretary. FABLE is an international association of artists living in France or abroad, united by their appreciation of French culture.
Sergeev has a studio in Haute-Savoie, where he organizes exhibitions and meetings for members of the FABLE association. In 2024, he achieved notable success with an exhibition at the renowned contemporary art venue Écuries de Saint-Hugues in Cluny (France).
Today, his works, exhibited since 1975, are held in museums and collections such as the State Hermitage Museum (Vyborg branch), the State Russian Museum, the Sergey Kuryokhin Foundation, the ERARTA Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Nonconformist Art in Saint Petersburg, the Zimmerli Art Museum (New Brunswick, New Jersey, USA), the Kolodzei Art Foundation (USA), the Sandretto Foundation (Italy), the Jean Bonna Collection (Switzerland), as well as in numerous private collections, including those of Helen Mirren and Taylor Hackford (USA).
